DEAR ELLIE:

As my boyfriend of six years and I were breaking up, he announced, "You're 33. You're becoming an old, wilted, dried-up prune. Good guys with a total package are hard to come by. You'll end up baby-sitting a younger man, nursing an old grandfather or become an old cougar. Let me know when you find someone better."

I left him and am enjoying my freedom. But his comments keep repeating in my mind, making me angry. Is what he said true or false? -- Dried-up?

DEAR DRIED-UP?:

Don't let this blowhard get to you anymore. You are in a woman's prime years. Dumping him proves you have the sense to make better choices than he predicts.

Dear Dried Up,

Let me tell you what "Gawd's gift to Women" really meant, though he couldn't say it:

"I am an asshole, and I am losing the best thing that ever happened to me. I know I'll never find anything as good as this again so I will say something that I know will really irritate her. Why should I suffer alone?"

Does this clarify things?

For future reading, I suggest Aesop's fable of "The Fox and the Grapes."
